Durham PCC shows his support for International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day takes place annually on 8 March and thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. Local activities connect women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking event’s through to local women's craft markets and theatre performances.
Each year International Women’s Day has a different theme. These themes have ranged from Women and HIV/AIDS to Empowering Rural Women and Ending Hunger and Poverty. The United Nations have declared their International Women's Day theme for 2013 as “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women”.
Ron Hogg, Police and Crime Commissioner for Durham, fully supports the purpose and values of International Women’s Day and this is reflected in his new Police and Crime Plan.
Mr Hogg said:
‘Through my Police and Crime Plan I have identified my own personal policing priorities, one of which will be to reduce the impact of domestic abuse, particularly violence against women and girls. I will be holding my first Domestic Abuse Seminar in April with local agencies to identify any gaps in service delivery and to ultimately improve outcomes for victims’
