Ron Hogg calls for employers to support domestic abuse victims

Fifty of the region's largest employers have been called on to support victims of domestic abuse thanks to an innovative new scheme launched by Durham Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Ron Hogg.

Reducing the impact of domestic abuse, particularly violence against women and girls, is one of Mr Hogg's policing priorities.

Mr Hogg has directly contacted key regional businesses to raise awareness of the problem of abuse and the impact on employers and employees within the workplace. He said:

"Statistics show that people tend to under report abuse, bullying and even violence. Nationally, it is estimated that one in four women and one in six men will be subject to domestic abuse/violence at some point during their life. I want to do everything I can to help eradicate this at home and in the work place.

"Domestic violence and abuse not only impacts on employees’ ability to provide and care for themselves and their families, but it also affects the financial strength and success of the organisations they work for.

"In many cases the violence and abuse can spill out of the home and into the workplace. Employees who are abusers may use employers’ resources such as telephone, email and company vehicles to make threats and stalk their victim."

Employers who take up the offer from Durham Constabulary, which is free of charge, will be able to demonstrate a no tolerance stance to abuse and violence as part of a duty of care and wellbeing responsibilities to their employees.
