20mph road sign
A decision to introduce 20mph zones around selected schools has been welcomed by Ron Hogg, Durham's Police and Crime Commissioner.
Durham County Council's Cabinet members agreed the move at a meeting held yesterday [17 December].
Mr Hogg is working with a range of partners towards tackling road safety issues and fully supports this decision by the Council, which will help to keep more young people safe when travelling to and from school.
Mr Hogg said: "I welcome the County Council's decision to implement 20mph zones around selected schools across County Durham. National evaluations have shown that blanket schemes do not work and many have been disbanded.
"The approach adopted by the County Council is considered, intelligence led and aimed at protecting our young people.
"This is a significant step forward in road safety and is thus to be applauded."
Prior to implementation, the Council will be consulting with the public about the decision.
