The Office of the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner (ODPCC) is keen to hear from people in the local community who are looking to make a real difference.
The ODPCC is looking to recruit several individuals with a variety of experience to become scrutiny panel volunteers. The purpose of the panels is to support a consistent, coherent, and credible approach that results in evidence-based recommendations to the force for positive change.
Scrutiny panels that the ODPCC host include the Domestic Abuse Panel, Rape Scrutiny Panel, BUS (BAME arrest, Use of Force and Stop and Search) Panel, Out of Court Panel, Complaints Scrutiny Panel, Ethics Committee and Hate Crime Panel.
Scrutiny groups are responsible for critically examining a sample of cases and identifying issues which can lead to corresponding action by the Constabulary, providing an integrated approach between the groups so key learnings can be identified to influence the decisions that the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) makes.
A significant part of the scrutiny panel consists of members of the public working with the PCC to ensure Durham Constabulary is following best practice.
You will be expected to identify issues and make recommendations, so communities maintain confidence in Durham Constabulary, which in turn helps to influence the decisions that the PCC makes.
Scrutiny Panel Volunteers are vital because they:
• Provide real life experiences
• Generate new ideas and ways of doing things
• Challenge assumptions about existing ways of working
The ODPCC is looking for Scrutiny Panel Volunteers to get involved and meet 4-6 times each year.
